Track 1 is the result of the Résidence de recherche in Marseille, part of the Nouveau Grand Tour II with curatorial support from Ron Reyes Sevilla and Nicolò Maria Moscatelli. Reflecting on my artistic practice and my the role of museum mediator, and thus on the connections between writing, mapping, education, ephemeral installations, and community activation practiced through the project Corrispondenze, Track 1 has been developed as maps, sounds, videos, and urban signs. Exploring the thresholds between personal and collective space, working on a ground of conceptual reflection and physical movement, both in the urban environment and in the studio Track 1 represents a first attempt to imagine methods of artistic analysis and production by activating links between the places passed through.

During the two-month residency, I explored the connections between my personal artistic research, the Corrispondenze project, and my professional activity as a cultural mediator. These three directions – artistic, editorial, and professional – intertwined with the themes I usually investigate, taking on different forms depending on the roles I assume in various contexts. I initiated a reflection on the space of the personal and the collective, delving into the dynamics of contextualizing the elements that define one or the other.
Track 1 represents only one part of the process: a stage in which I played with words, maps, and paths related to my working space in Marseille – a temporary home –, to the presence of other resident artists, and to the ways in which I perceived living in and constructing the city. I built mental connections between Marseille and other places I have crossed and inhabited in the past, in an attempt at a dislocated narrative, rooted in the experience of space from a subjective perspective. A narrative conceived as a possibility for reconstruction and re-signification of forms and signs for a collective counter-mapping of reality.
The outcomes of the research took on several forms:
– a video that combines the sound of an attempt at mapping a wall in my studio with a conceptual displacement of that wall;
– another video framing the ceiling of the studio, perceptually transformed into a surface one could walk on, as a symbol of the research state;
– maps of my movements within the studio and of the positions occupied by my work tables;
– an audio track of sounds produced by the other residents, who lived exactly above the studio, and whose movements resonated on the floor below;
– the construction of islands made up of symbols and signs collected in the streets of Marseille – especially those used in construction sites –, extracted from their original context and reactivated to generate a visual language based on the terms threshold, mediation, crossing, direction.
Track 1 marks the beginning of designing tools capable of reactivating and reconnecting past experiences and working methods, allowing the track I come from to encounter and continue within the places I have temporarily inhabited and will inhabit.
